This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Yard, Industrial Department, Services Group in Baltimore, MD.

You will perform all kinds of trade tasks involved in constructing, repairing or renovating a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member.  Typical duties include:

  • Working from blueprints, drawings, sketches, and technical manuals, performing and directing placement, removal, or repositioning of machinery, structural members of ships or buildings, heavy equipment, or other loads.
  • Estimating weight and center of gravity of load to be moved; planning weight distribution and load maneuvering; bracing; cushioning, and other wise preparing load.
  • Installing beam clamps, gin poles, gallows frames, and other supporting structures; and using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, rollers, and similar equipment.
  • Assisting in ship docking operations by laying out and handling lines and tackle, snubbing lines on cleats or bollards, hauling on lines.
  • Installing masts, booms, yards, and gaffs, working aloft as necessary.
  • Installing, inspecting, and repairing crane rigging.
  • Splicing fiber rope and making various rope assemblies.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREENOUT)

2. Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc.

3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)

4. Use of measuring instruments

5. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)

6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment

7. Knowledge of materials
