This position has been designated as an Essential Position (e.g., snow emergency days, holidays, increased security periods, national emergency). The position cannot be vacated during war or national emergency without seriously impairing the mission. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization. Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

To qualify for a Police Officer (Instructor) your resume and supporting documentation must support:

One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. For current and former Federal civilian service employees, to qualify for the GS-09 grade level, specialized experience must be at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. For all other applicants, to qualify for the GS-09 grade level, specialized experience must be at the GS-08 grade level or equivalent in the military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:

GS-07

  • Conducting law enforcement training classes.
  • Developing lesson/training plans pertaining to law enforcement.
  • Writing incident/accident reports

GS-08

  • Conducting a variety of law enforcement training classes.
  • Developing lesson/training plans pertaining to law enforcement.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of a training program.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work requires considerable physical exertion involving walking, bending, running or prolonged standing and occasional climbing and working in stressful situations. Individual must be medically qualified on an annual basis.

Work Environment: Work is performed inside of facilities and vehicles as well as outdoors in inclement weather, well lighted and dark areas, and with friendly and hostile people. Possible exposure to high risk and danger when confronting employee/suspects involving assault, breach of peace and more serious crimes. Employees may be required to use personal protective clothing or gear, such as respirators, coats, safety shoes, goggles, hearing protection and/or gloves.
