Job Description

Because this role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work, it will take the form of a hybrid work format, with time split between working onsite 2-3 days per week and remotely.

SAS is a multi-purpose sonar system providing 360 degrees of acoustic situational awareness to the US Navy submarine fleet.  The SAS program encompasses the full life-cycle from technical studies and development to production and depot support. 

BAE Systems is seeking a self-motivated and experienced senior-level program manager to manage the SAS program, with roughly $35M in orders per year.  This position has the responsibility for the leadership and management oversight of a project team assuring that project’s financials, schedule, and technical objectives are met and that the highest level of customer satisfaction is achieved while meeting all contractual commitments.  Reporting to the Maritime Sensors & Systems Program Area Director, this role will require strong cross functional leadership and customer management to operate in this dynamic environment balancing program execution as well as supporting new business initiatives.

The candidate must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with Engineering, Operations, and all Program Office functional leadership to assure deliveries continue to exceed customer commitments and achievement of financial commitments to the company.   Manages, coordinates, plans, organizes, controls, integrates, and executes a collection of production, depot, spares, and engineering services projects. Participates in the support of new business and in the development of proposals. Models and demonstrates strong leadership in ethics, safety and security.

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Provide leadership and management oversight for the SAS program family, assuring the team’s Program Area, Product Line and Business Area objectives are met and that the highest level of customer satisfaction is achieved.
  • Responsible and accountable to the Program Area and Product Line Management for program execution, profitability, timeliness, and overall success. Makes timely decisions that are cost effective to the company and ensures assigned projects meet financial commitments for orders, sales, profit, and cash. 
  • Accountable for all aspects of assigned program’s execution (cost, schedule, technical performance, quality, risk management, and customer engagement) throughout all the Life Cycle Management (LCM) phases, ensuring program commitments are met while having the authority to make cogent and timely decisions related to the project.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact between BAE Systems and the customer program office, suppliers, and key customer stakeholders.
  • Participates in the creation and development of new business strategies and financial plans
  • Excellent executive presence and communication skills, including oral presentations and written correspondence.
  • Exhibits sound judgment, fact-based decision making and effective negotiations up and down the chain of command with both internal leadership and external customers and suppliers.
  • Exhibits exceptional interpersonal skills while interfacing with program team members, company personnel, suppliers, and customers.
  • Improves our work environment by promoting teamwork, wellness, workplace flexibility, modeling inclusive behaviors, and increasing leadership engagement.
  • Ensures the program teams compliance to BAE Systems Operational Framework and the Operational Assurance Statement. Executes the business in a responsible, safe, secure, and ethical manner while complying with company policies and applicable state, federal and foreign laws.

Required Skills and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience leading and inspiring teams in a high tempo environment. 
  • Successful, proven past performance in leading and managing multi-discipline defense programs and teams. 
  • Expertise in project management and supply chain & subcontract management. 
  • Very strong presentation and organizational skills. 
  • Adaptable with a high degree of initiative. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in the development and production of high reliability assemblies and electronics.
  • US Citizen with an active Secret Clearance required, and able to obtain Top Secret Clearance

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Preferably 12 years of experience
  • Program Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Management, or Business Administration.
  • Detailed knowledge of the defense aerospace market and experience working with US Navy program offices.
  • Experience in new business capture.
  • Experience in business case development, analysis, and presentation. 
  • Active Top Secret Clearance.
